Robert Agranoff is Professor Emeritus in the School of Public and
Environmental Affairs, Indiana University–Bloomington, where he remains
as part of the Policy and Administration and the Urban and Regional faculty
groups. Prior to his retirement from full-time status, he served as associate
dean for Bloomington, director of Public Affairs/Public Policy Doctoral
Programs, and chairperson, Policy and Administration Faculty (1980–2001).
Since 1990, he has been affiliated with the Government and Public
Administration Program of the Instituto Universitario Ortega y Gasset in
Madrid, Spain.
Professor Agranoff’s work focuses on public and intergovernmental management
and federalism. His most recent co-authored (with Michael
McGuire) book is Collaborative Public Management: New Strategies for
Local Government (Georgetown University Press: April 2003). Previous
books authored/coauthored include: Dimensions of Human Services Integration, Intergovernmental Management: Human Services Problem Solving in Six Metropolitan Areas, and New Governance for Rural America: Creating Intergovernmental Partnerships. He has contributed to many journals, including Public Administration Review, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Publius: The Journal of Federalism, International Political Science Review, and Federal and Regional Studies.
Although Agranoff holds emeritus status, he remains active in research and professional service, and in his school’s doctoral programs. He is currently an associate editor of the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory and chairperson of the Research Committee on Comparative Federalism of the International Political Science Association.
Agranoff graduated from the University of Wisconsin–River Falls in 1962, and from the University of Pittsburgh with an M.A. in 1963 and a Ph.D. in 1967, all in political science
