n a dynamic global landscape, the U.S. Department of State has also sought to advance diplomacy by pursuing effective knowledge-sharing as well as expanding the use of collaborative technology. What is eDiplomacy?

How is eDiplomacy moving State from a culture of need to know toward a culture of a need to share?

Technology and new innovations are changing the world in which we live. The U.S. Department of State has sought to leverage these new innovations in service of its diplomatic and development goals -- leveraging the networks, technologies, and demographics of the interconnected world. In this dynamic global landscape, State has also sought to restructure its organization and how it operates. Advancing diplomacy by pursuing effective knowledge-sharing as well as expanding the use of collaborative technology. It’s about identifying better ways to find information, network with others, and share knowledge – in essence, to encourage and enable State personnel to securely and effectively find and contribute knowledge anywhere, anytime.

  • What is eDiplomacy?
  • How is eDiplomacy moving State from a culture of need to know toward a culture of a need to share?
  • What does the future hold for eDiplomacy at the U.S. Department of State?

Richard Boly, director, Office of eDiplomacy within the U.S. Department of State joined me on The Business of Government Hour to explore these questions and more. I share some of Richard's insights this post.

Richard Boly on eDiplomacy - What is eDiplomacy and would you outline the transformative goals of eDiplomacy?

Richard Boly on Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing Platforms - With this critical context, I’d like to transition to specific initiatives and platforms that you are hosting and pursuing as a way to realize the secretary’s vision. The ability to maintain institutional knowledge has always been a challenge for State with staff rotated from assignment to assignment on a regular basis (every two years). To that end, would you briefly describe the range of collaboration and knowledge sharing platforms developed and supported by eDiplomacy?
