Next wave of Race to the Top finalists announced

Just about an hour ago, Arne Duncan, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, announced the names of the finalists for the second wave of Race to the Top grants.

The 19 finalists – which will all get the opportunity to buttress their case in coming weeks, in hopes of actually receiving cash: Arizona, California, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and South Carolina.

Prior to actually naming the 18 states and D.C., Duncan made clear that these finalists, which promised reforms in exchange for economic support, “will be held accountable for those commitments.”

He went on “But every state that applied will benefit from this consensus-building process. Much of the federal dollars we distribute though other channels can support their plan to raise standards, improve teaching, use data more effectively to support student learning, and turn around under-performing schools.”
