As one of his first acts in office, President Barack Obama
issued his Memorandum on Transparency directing the work
of the federal government—and all its information—to be
more transparent. According to the memo, transparency promotes
accountability and provides information for citizens
about what their government is doing. It also calls for executive
departments and agencies to harness new technologies
to put information about their operations and decisions
online and readily available to the public.
