"Many other major departments have challenges in their mission—but a basically stable mission. Our
major foe is small terrorist groups who have a very nimble and quick adaptation to us securing any
kind of threat. So the minute we have something in place to deal with one threat, they’re on to the
next threat much more quickly than some of our traditional defense enemies.”
The creation of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security
(DHS) represents one of the largest reorganizations in government
since World War II. Its mission consists of five priorities:
to protect the nation from dangerous people; protect
the nation from dangerous goods; protect the critical infrastructure;
build a nimble, effective emergency response system
and a culture of preparedness; and strengthen and unify
DHS operations and management.
